The FIA, motorsport's governing body, announced on 28 October 2026 that Amazon Web Services will become its Official Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Machine Learning and Cloud Infrastructure Partner, deploying AI tools and high-performance computing to develop future Formula 1 regulations while modernizing governance and licensing for motorsport at every level. The deal is distinct from AWS's long-running partnership with Formula 1, the commercial rights holder, and instead puts the technology at the heart of the regulator itself.

Revolutionizing Elite F1 Regulation Development

The most technically significant strand of the partnership concerns the FIA's role in writing the rules that define Formula 1's next generation of cars. According to the FIA's announcement, AWS will provide artificial intelligence tools to support FIA engineers developing regulations intended to improve safety, performance and sustainability across motorsport.

The governing body already uses AWS high-performance computing to run aerodynamic simulations, allowing engineers to analyse airflow around racing cars virtually without manufacturing physical components. That capability, the FIA says, lets it evaluate new aerodynamic concepts more efficiently while reducing development costs and environmental impact.

Reporting by The Race adds concrete detail on how this will function in practice: AWS will sit at the core of the FIA's CFD work, bringing it into the governing body's own virtual windtunnel and supporting the creation of concept cars. Those concepts can check questions such as how much downforce is lost when a car follows another, and whether a set of rules actually produces the racing the FIA wants. Generative AI will not be used to prompt design ideas yet — the stated priority is using the tools to accelerate and support human work.
