India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed a significant deep-tech agreement with Zero mK India, an Alwar, Rajasthan-based startup, to indigenously develop a 20 millikelvin (mK) dilution refrigerator for quantum applications. This collaboration marks the first high-value deep-tech project under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme, which has a dedicated allocation of Rs 500 crore for advanced technology initiatives, as reported by The Quantum Insider and The Economic Times.
The project aims to bolster India's domestic capabilities in quantum technology and cryogenics, thereby reducing the nation's reliance on imported cryogenic equipment and foreign infrastructure.
Strategic Funding and Oversight
The agreement was formally signed in New Delhi by the Director of the Technology Development Fund and representatives from Zero mK India Private Limited. This initiative is the inaugural high-value deal to draw from the Rs 500 crore corpus approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for deep-tech and cutting-edge projects, according to India Today.
Monitoring of this crucial project will be conducted by the director of DRDO's Solid State Physics Laboratory and their team. This oversight ensures the project aligns with the broader goal of reducing dependence on foreign cryogenic infrastructure for quantum technologies, a point emphasized by The Economic Times.
The Critical Role of 20 mK Dilution Refrigeration
A 20 mK-class dilution refrigerator is a specialized cryogenic system designed to achieve extremely low temperatures in the millikelvin range. These ultra-low temperatures are essential for the operation and testing of various quantum computing platforms and associated quantum technologies, as explained by India Today and the defence ministry.
Such precise and extreme cooling is a foundational requirement for maintaining the delicate quantum states necessary for quantum computing, making the indigenous development of this technology a critical step for India's quantum ambitions.
Boosting India's Quantum Infrastructure
This indigenous development project is aligned with the National Quantum Mission and is intended to strengthen India’s capabilities in quantum technology, advanced cryogenics, and strategic technologies. The overarching goal is to cut dependence on imported cryogenic infrastructure, fostering self-reliance in a critical technological domain, a strategic objective highlighted by The Quantum Insider and the defence ministry.
By developing this core component domestically, India takes a significant stride towards constructing vital foundational infrastructure required for advanced quantum applications, as Bharat Shakti reported.
